In the week of April 15th 2019, LIVE Melbourne hosted three Olympus Academy Courses: Endoscopic Ultrasound Training, Endoscope Reprocessing Specialist Training and Endobronchial Ultrasound Training. Facilitating the training was Sharon Kirk (Clinical Educator, Medical Affairs) and Laurie Mallia (Clinical Affairs Lead/Clinical Educator, Medical Affairs).
Endoscopic Ultrasound Training (EUS): Monday 15th April
EUS training saw five nurses attend from Frankston Hospital, Epworth Eastern, Box Hill Hospital, and Cabrini Health. Assisting on the day was Sajindra Bandara (Product Specialist – EUS, Marketing). The training covered EUS indications, basic background physics, image interpretation and EUS scope differences. These didactic sessions were followed by hands-on sessions covering EUS fine needle aspiration and sampling, as well as trouble shooting.
Endoscope Reprocessing Specialist Training (ERST): Tuesday 16th April
ERST brought with it a full house, with ten guests in attendance. The group was a mix of cleaning technicians, nurses and nurse unit managers coming from a variety of hospitals: Austin Health, Mitcham Private Hospital, Monash Health Clayton, Seymour Health, Knox Private Hospital, Western Health and Sunshine Hospital. The training is aimed at educating attendees on the correct procedures when reprocessing Olympus endoscopes, covering topics such as endoscope mechanics, reprocessing overview, pre-cleaning steps and hands on practice utilising the LIVE cleaning room. Included in the day was a tour of the LIVE centre as well as the National Service Centre, giving attendees a deeper understanding of Olympus as a company and the process their scopes go through when sent for repair.
Endobronchial Ultrasound Training (EBUS): Wednesday 17th April
Wrapping up the three days of Olympus Academy courses was the EBUS training which was attended by three nurses coming from Eastern Health, Box Hill Hospital and Monash Health. The EBUS training took attendees through the theory of ultrasound, how EBUS-TBNA is performed, radial EBUS theory and a hands-on session covering TBNA needle and radial EBUS.
